First, let me start off by apologising for the lack of recent updates on this community site. Everything is going very well, in fact, we have been very busy here at Turbo Tape Games, first and foremost with Naval War, but also with other exciting projects that fund our business.
Today, however, we reached a major development milestone that I had to tell you about: Our front-end (user interface) and back-end (game server) now communicate with each other.
Both subprojects have progressed very well over the last months. In what we call the backend, the actual game logic, ships and aircraft have been happily cruising around in their own world, seeing each other, shooting at each other, all that stuff, but it has only been visible as entries in a text log, which is not very deeply satisfying (we are, however, joking about releasing a command line version of the game for hard-hard core players!). On the front-end, which is looking more and more beautiful every day, things have also been progressing very well. We have ships and planes, sun and sea, camera, buttons and menus, and the other day we also got some very nice rain effects (we're in Bergen, known for its rain, so of course!).
Today, however, we tied the two parts together. Units in game logic actually tell the frontend where they are and what they do. When the user tells a ship where to go, it is actually a logical entity moving around. It will be much more immediately rewarding to work on both ends of the game when we get a satisfying visual (and soon, audio!) feedback.
We have also been working on other crucial aspects of the game. Our game object editor is very close to fully operational, which will save a lot of time when creating and editing units, weapons, sensors and gameplay logic. We intend to use this tool to craft the game itself when the engine is up and running. We will of course share our tools with you, the players.
Obviously, there is still a lot of work to do. But we are seeing what we believe is a very great game taking shape here at Turbo Tape headquarters, and while even a test release is still quite a few months into the future, be assured we are making steady progress.
We thank you for your continued support and patience.
Sincerely,
Jan Haugland
